“…boundlessness is the nature of all things. It neither arises nor perishes, neither stains nor purifies, neither increases nor decreases…

The Boundless Refuge’s core offering is an annual three-month practice period with optimal conditions for meditation practice. Dedicated practitioners gather for a season in a secluded forest and live in Noble Silence and with Ethical Discipline, creating an atmosphere of collective harmony and an inward focus. A rigorous schedule of formal meditation combined with teacher meetings nourishes the growth of Mindfulness and Samadhi. Through silence and stillness, we open to life, and the roots of suffering in our heart are transformed into wisdom and compassion. This is a profound gift to ourselves and to wider society.

Dates for Spring 2023 Retreat: March 14th - June 12th

All our offerings are given with an open hand in a culture of dana. As a community our guiding values are the traditional three Buddhist trainings of Dana, Sila, and Bhavana, which we aspire to embody in their full breadth and depth.

…Free from confusion, those who lead all to liberation embody profound serenity…”

-The Heart Sutra

Practioners’ Reflections

  • Melissa

This was the most important thing I've done in my life. It's hard to convey how powerful it was. North taught us to cultivate a sense of spacious awareness that has led to a dramatic reduction in my own suffering and an increase in my capacity to show up for the suffering of others. I am filled with gratitude.

  • Ned

I left the three month practice period knowing I had been privileged to have received teachings of deep truth. North’s dharma touched on a range of traditions and methods, but what was consistent throughout was the importance he placed on a freedom which felt both incredibly close and incredibly important. I left the practice period feeling that taking one’s seat is as simple as recognizing what was already here. There is a newfound sense of capacity in me that is best described as the simple knowing that “all is welcome.” This may not sound like much but I feel that it is enough to build an entire life upon.

  • Dylan

North’s teaching is direct, compassionate, and responsive, and he is willing to go to great lengths to meet someone where they are. The Practice Period is a wonderful opportunity to deepen your practice in a setting that is both challenging and supportive. North was able to create conditions for practice that are hard to find anywhere.

  • Phil

I was braced for discomfort and inner turmoil but was surprised to discover that waking up in the predawn hours and sitting silently with unknown figures was actually a door gently opening toward liberation. That corner of earth, that particular spot where we gathered, is resonant with peace and wisdom that still rings clear now many months later. North's gracious hosting and playful teaching bring forth vast open space in each of the participants. How lucky to get to be there for it.
